Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras, under the direction of Robert Genualdi, has become the premier youth orchestra program in Connecticut. Bob retired at the end of the 2006-07 season after 26 years of distinguished leadership with GBYO. To honor him, the GBYO Board proudly announces the creation of the Genualdi Enrichment in Music (GEM) Fund, GBYO’s first endowed fund.
Enrichment experiences dramatically raise the level of excellence for which GBYO is widely recognized. These experiences include performing with noted guest artists and premiering commissioned compositions; performing in world-class venues such as Carnegie Hall; and supplementing GBYO’s equipment with new and better instruments to achieve the best sound possible. The purpose of the GEM Fund is to provide an annual income that will ensure that GBYO can always provide such opportunities.
In addition to providing talented young musicians opportunities to perform the world’s greatest music, GBYO offers its members unique social and musical experiences. Annual retreats allow the students to practice hard and then relax together, achieving a “team” mentality that carries through to the music they play together. A rotating schedule brings commissioned works, guest conductors, and talented soloists on stage with GBYO, giving GBYO students experience playing with a variety of different artists. Recently, Principal Orchestra debuted “Beyond the Bridge” by Gary Gibson, an orchestral arrangement featuring percussion. Listen to an excerpt from rehearsal here. GBYO also presents an annual Concerto Competition for the most accomplished members of the Principal Orchestra.
